Ribbon, Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve

The Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, instituted in 1908, was awarded to part-time commissioned officers of the RNVR after twenty years of efficient service. Recipients used the post-nominal letters VD until circa 1947, and VRD thereafter.

The decoration was the naval equivalent of the Volunteer Officers’ Decoration and later the Territorial Decoration, and was also awarded to officers of Colonial Naval Volunteer Reserves across the British Empire.

Awards in the United Kingdom ceased in 1966 following the merger of the RNVR with the Royal Naval Reserve, when it was replaced by the identical Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve. The New Zealand version remains in use.
